    How to Cycle a Betta Tank

    Cycling a betta tank means growing a colony of beneficial bacteria in your filter before your fish ever touches the water. Those bacteria convert fish waste into a form that will not poison your betta. The process takes three to six weeks in a fishless setup, and skipping it is the most common reason a healthy betta dies within its first month at home. Here is how the nitrogen cycle works and how to cycle a betta tank step by step.

    What Cycling a Betta Tank Means

    A brand new aquarium filled with dechlorinated tap water is biologically empty. The moment a betta goes in, it releases ammonia through its gills and its waste, and with no bacteria present to process it, levels climb fast and start burning gill tissue.

    Unionized ammonia at levels as low as 0.05 mg/L is enough to cause visible damage to gill tissue in fish, and warmer, more alkaline water pushes more of the total ammonia into that toxic unionized form.

    Cycling builds that bacterial workforce ahead of time. You feed the tank ammonia, wait for two bacteria groups to establish themselves in your filter media, and add your betta once those bacteria can clear a full day of waste in 24 hours. 

    Aquarists call the failure to do this new tank syndrome, and it explains most cases of a betta losing color, clamping its fins, or sitting at the bottom during week two.

    The Nitrogen Cycle Explained in Three Stages

    The nitrogen cycle is a chain reaction run by microbes living on your filter sponge, your substrate, and every surface in the tank. Each stage produces the food for the next one, which is why the whole thing builds in order.

    Stage 1: Ammonia Appears

    Fish waste, uneaten pellets, decaying plants, and normal gill respiration all release ammonia into the water. This is the most dangerous compound in the chain, and your target reading in an established betta tank is 0 ppm.

    Stage 2: Nitrite Takes Over

    Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria such as Nitrosomonas colonize the filter and convert ammonia into nitrite. Nitrite is still toxic. It enters fish through the same gill channels that absorb chloride, then binds to red blood cells and blocks oxygen transport, which is why nitrite poisoning is known as brown blood disease

    Your target is also 0 ppm.

    Stage 3: Nitrate Builds Up

    A second bacteria group, mainly Nitrospira, converts nitrite into nitrate. Recent sequencing work found that complete ammonia-oxidizing Nitrospira dominate home aquarium biofilters and can carry out both steps on their own. Nitrate is far less harmful and only causes trouble when it accumulates. Weekly partial water changes and live plants remove it. Keep it under 20 ppm for a betta.

    What You Need Before You Start

    Essential tools for cycling a betta tank. 

     

    Gather everything before day one so you can test from the first hour:

    • A liquid test kit that reads ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. Paper strips are too imprecise for cycling.
    • An ammonia source. Pure household ammonia with no surfactants, dyes, or perfume works best. A pinch of fish food also works.
    • A water conditioner to neutralize chlorine and chloramine in tap water.
    • A heater set to 78 to 80°F, since bacteria multiply faster in warm water.
    • A running filter with sponge or ceramic bio media, which is where the colony actually lives.
    • A notebook or phone note for daily readings.

    How to Cycle a Betta Tank Without Fish

    Fishless cycling is the method we recommend for every beginner. Your betta stays safe at the store while the tank does the hard work.

    Step 1: Set Up the Tank and Treat the Water

    Fill the tank, add conditioner at the dose printed on the bottle, and switch on the heater and filter. Let both run for 24 hours to confirm the temperature holds steady and the flow stays gentle enough for long betta fins.

    Step 2: Add Your Ammonia Source

    Dosing liquid ammonia into the tank.

     

    Dose liquid ammonia until your test kit reads between 2 and 4 ppm. Going much higher stalls the colony, since concentrated ammonia inhibits the same bacteria you are trying to grow. If you are using fish food, drop in a few flakes and let them break down over several days.

    Step 3: Test Daily and Write It Down

    Check ammonia and nitrite every day at roughly the same time. For the first week you will usually see ammonia sitting high with nothing else moving. That flat stretch is normal.

    Step 4: Watch for the Nitrite Spike

    Somewhere between day 7 and day 21, ammonia starts falling and nitrite climbs, which proves the first bacteria group has taken hold. Nitrite often spikes hard and stays high for a week or more before the second group catches up.

    Step 5: Redose Ammonia as It Drops

    Every time ammonia falls to 0, add more to bring it back to 2 ppm. Stopping the feed at this point starves the growing colony and sets you back.

    Step 6: Confirm the Cycle Is Finished

    Your tank is cycled when you can dose ammonia to 2 ppm and, 24 hours later, read 0 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrite, and a measurable nitrate figure. Run that test twice on consecutive days before you trust it.

    Step 7: Do a Large Water Change and Add Your Betta

    Nitrate runs very high by the end of a cycle. Change 50 to 80% of the water, match the temperature, treat the new water, and acclimate your betta by floating the bag and adding tank water in stages.

    How Long Does Cycling a Betta Tank Take

    Three to six weeks is the honest answer for a fishless cycle with no help. A study tracking three home aquariums found ammonia and nitrite dropped to undetectable levels by week 3 in two tanks and week 8 in the third, which shows how much variation is normal between setups.

    How to Speed Up the Cycle

    Bacteria need time, though a few things reliably shorten the wait. The most effective method is to move a live colony straight into your tank.

    Transferring established filter media. 

    Borrow Media From an Established Tank

    Ask a friend or a local fish store for a used filter sponge, a handful of gravel, or a few ceramic rings from a healthy tank. Squeezing an old sponge into your new filter can cut weeks off the timeline. Keep the media wet during transport, since the bacteria die quickly once they dry out.

    Use a Bottled Bacteria Starter

    Refrigerated bottled starters from a shop with good stock rotation can seed the tank on day one. Follow the label dose and keep testing until your readings confirm the tank is ready.

    Other conditions that help the colony grow:

    • Hold the temperature at 78 to 82°F throughout the cycle.
    • Keep oxygen levels high with an air stone or gentle surface movement, since nitrification is an aerobic process.
    • Keep pH at 7.0 or above, because acidic water slows nitrifying bacteria down.
    • Skip water changes during the cycle unless ammonia climbs past 5 ppm.
    • Leave the lights off most of the day to limit algae while nothing else is competing.

    Cycling With Your Betta Already in the Tank

    Plenty of people find this article after the fish is already home. A fish-in cycle works with daily attention, and your job is to keep ammonia and nitrite below 0.25 ppm the whole time.

    • Test every single day without exception.
    • Change 25 to 50% of the water whenever ammonia or nitrite reads above 0.25 ppm.
    • Feed once a day at most, using two or three pellets, since ammonia excretion rises with feeding.
    • Add a water conditioner that binds ammonia into a safer form between changes.
    • Avoid gravel vacuuming deeply during this period so the young colony stays intact.

    Expect six to eight weeks. Watch your betta for red or inflamed gills, gasping at the surface, clamped fins, and appetite loss.

    Mistakes That Stall a Betta Tank Cycle

    Rinsing filter media with tap water mistake. 

    Most stalled cycles trace back to one of these:

    • Rinsing filter media under the tap, where chlorine kills the bacteria on contact.
    • Throwing out a filter cartridge that only needed a rinse in old tank water.
    • Adding medication or antibacterial treatments mid-cycle.
    • Dosing ammonia above 5 ppm, which inhibits growth.
    • Letting the heater fail and the temperature drop into the low 70s.
    • Testing with expired strips and trusting the number.

    Keeping the Cycle Stable After Your Betta Moves In

    A cycled tank stays cycled as long as the bacteria keep getting fed and nothing sterilizes the filter. Weekly 25% water changes, monthly testing, and a light feeding schedule cover almost all of it. Rinse your sponge in a cup of old tank water whenever flow slows, and replace only part of the media at a time if you upgrade equipment.
